TID-BITS ON VARICELLA-ZOSTER VIRUS

aka. Shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia

  • How common is it? By the time of adulthood almost 100% of the UK population would have gotten it. However in tropical countries the rates are alot lower.
  • How is it caught? Chickenpox is caught like the flu. The virus floats in the air from the breath of an infected person. When it returns it is called shingles.
  • How long before it appears (incubation period)? Normally two weeks.
  • What signs come with it? A flu-like illness followed by blisters all over the body.

    This is the Varicella-zoster virus.
